In the heart of Lamu old town, Mwenya Amin House is a tastefully restored swahili house; a 4 mins walk from the jetty and seafront.
STYLE: Swahili House
IDEAL FOR: Couples, small family, friends. 3 bedrooms, sleeps 4 adults and two children.
SETTING: In Lamu old town, the oldest living swahili town on the coast. Lamu has a relaxed, medieval atmosphere, street noise is limited to people and donkeys as streets are far too narrow for cars. Lamu is world heritage listed.
WHY HERE: Lamu is a different experience from the traditional beach holiday: it is total relaxation, far away from our busy world, in a place where time has stood still. Apart from endless white sandy beaches, one can also enjoy a rich history and culture.
GENERAL: The house is thought to be over 250 years old. It once belonged to the Al-Bakry family, one of the ruling families in Lamu. Keeping to the original design and using mostly local materials, the house has retained its "harmonious irregularity" and much of its old soul and character.
NEAREST AIRPORT: Manda airport with daily flights to Nairobi on Air Kenya, Safarilink and Fly 540.
NEAREST BEACH: Shella beach, 15 minutes boat ride away.
GETTING AROUND: On foot, donkeys, boats and traditional sailing dhows, the caretaker can helpbook or link up with a boat/dhow captain at the jetty.

Notes and Additional Information
At Mwenye Amin they try to be as eco-friendly as posible : They encourage the cook to use baskets instead of plastic bags, to recycle plastic bottles, to compost all fruit and vegetable waste. Kindly respect and encourage those house rules. Also, they have consciously avoided flush toilets for various reasons: it is nearly impossible to maintain sceptic tanks in the old town, as a result flush toilets are installed on the old sewerage system with water seepage and contamination of nearby wells as a result. Moreover, Lamu being an island with very little rainfall, fresh water is an extremely scarce resource. Kindly use water sparingly and preferably bring your natural shampoo's and shower gels.
